Quick guide to the Discover-e 'virtual classroom
Go to the URL given by your co-ordinator.

Click on the 'enter the conference room' link

Entering
Simply click on the 'Enter the conference room' button

You will see a screen that will initiate the 'Chat Client Download' screen. When it is complete, the conference room system will launch automatically displaying the 'Simple Software' screen shown below requesting that you enter your screen name (alias).

Enter a screen name that will allow others to identify you. .. leave password blank.

Once in the 'classroom', this is what the interface will look like.

To speak
Hold down the left CTRL key. A bubble will appear to the left of your name. Begin speaking when your name jumps to the top of the list. Release the CTRL key when you've finished speaking.

While speaking, the 'needle' on the audio/volume will move continuously. No movement of the audio/volume indicator while you're speaking means there is no signal coming from the microphone.

The 'voice' section is the most powerful component. It shows the names of participants.

Speaking is achieved by pressing down-and-holding the LEFT Ctrl key on your keyboard, or by positioning your mouse over the microphone icon and pressing down and holding your left mouse button on it.

The speaker and microphone controls allow you to adjust the sound level of your speakers or the sensitivity of your microphone.

Note: with a lot of participants, your request to speak will be queued to avoid chaos

You may press your left Ctrl key to speak at any time, even if you have another application or window in front of or covering up the Discover-e window. When someone is speaking, their name will move to the top of the user list and a green bubble will illuminate beside their name to identify them.

Text messages
To send a text message, place the cursor in the lower window of the 'text' box. Enter a text message and hit 'enter' key. Message will appear in the text message window

The Discover-e Conference Center has an Option menu:

Text Options
You can change the way the text chat is displayed in your text module. The following submenu opens to change your settings:

Time Stamp Entries: all text entries will be entered with the time showing on your computer's clock that each text entry was submitted.

Single Space Entries: all lines will be single spaced instead of the default double spacing.

Show Private Text Chat in Main Text Window: when selected this will open a 'Tab' for each person you send private messages to, if allowed by the owner/moderator.
This is a very useful function in a large conference where there are two or more moderators to assist each other in managing the meeting.

Enable Alerts: requires you to enter coding in a Notepad file to activate sounds (wav. files) that you would select to be emitted from your speakers when certain words or phrases are typed in the Discover-e Center. Only advanced users that know how to access wav. files on their computer's operating system should use this feature.

Miscellaneous Features of the Discover-e Conference room

The conference room has some additional features as described below. These features can be found within the "Options" Menu.

"Doorbell Feature"

If you would like the conference room to alert you with an audio cue when someone enters or leaves the conference room, you may activate the "Play Sound When Someone Enters/Leaves" option.

To activate this option, Right-Click and choose "Save Target as" on each of the filenames below and save the file into the C:/Chatterbox directory.

Enter.wav | Leave.wav

If you prefer a different sound, you may use any sound you like, as long as those files are placed into the C:\Chatterbox directory and renamed to Enter.wav for the Entry sound and Leave.wav for the Exit sound.
