Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Memorial Day Yom Hashoah is celebrated on the 27th of Nissan. It was started in Israel, by the prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, and the president , Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. This holiday was started to remember those who died in the Holocaust. It is celebrated by air-raid sirens sounding at 10:00 Am. for two minutes. During those two minutes everyone stops what they're doing and stands in silence. All day the flags are at half mast. Restaurants entertainment and banks are closed. Only Holocaust related shows are on TV. Israeli high-school students hold a memorial service in Auschwitz. Some people read the names of those who died one after another. The only decor they have are six torches to represent the six million people who died. They also have wreaths which the people set in front of the torches. It compares to our Veterans Day. The reason why I say that is because Veterans Day is a day that we set aside to remember those who serve. There is no school and banks are closed. But we don't sound sirens. Yom Hashaoh Yom Hashaoh is a time to take two minutes out of your day to remember the 6 million Jews were killed in Adolph Hitler's rage against the Jews. It started in Germany. It is an official holiday in 1959 in Israel. They started the holiday to remember the 6 million Jews that were killed during the Holocaust. The Jews celebrate by putting a wreath under six torches and they light them. They have special activities too. It takes two minutes in silence to remember the 6 million Jews lost in the holocaust. They dance and sing sad songs to remember them and express their pain.. They don't have any special foods. Yom Hashoah is just like Memorial Day to use. We take a minute to remember the men and women who fought for our freedom. We have a special song too. So I think the Jews are like us. Yom HaShoa Yom HaShoa was started by Knesset or the Israeli Parliament. It was started in the country of Israeli. It started April 12 1951. In the 1950's education about the Holocaust emphasized the suffering inflicted upon the millions of European Jews by the Nazis. On Yom Hashoa Theaters, cinemas, pubs, and other venues are closed. All televisions are connected to the same show as all others of World War 2 and interviews with survivors. A bell rings and there is a minute of silence for the soldiers of World War 2 the bell rings again at 11 P.M. and another minute of silence. It compares with Americas holiday memorial day in which we do not have school and we honor our veterans. So as you can tell we both gratefully honor our troops. |
