Yom Hashoah
By Mani

Yom Hashoah is the day for remembrance for the holocaust victims.
It was started in Israel on the 27th of the Jewish month Nissan[ January].

Jews celebrate Yom HaShoah by lighting yellow candles to remember the victims of the holocaust. Special traditions that they are obliged to do every time a siren sounds they have to pray for two minutes throughoutmthe day. I think that Yom HaShoah is most similar to Memorial Day. Because they both remember survivors and victims of wars or horrible events.

They both have special traditions they do, like we raise flags. We both pray for the victims.

Yom HaShoah is a holiday that the Jews celebrate. This holiday takes place on the 27th Nissan. The main point in this holiday is remembering the Jews who fought and died for their people.

During this holiday they light six candles to represent the six millionmJews who died in the Holocaust. They also recite prayers and observe two minutes of silence. Sirens go off through out the country, during themsilence. No matter what people are doing, workings, playing, in school they all have to stop what they are doing and stand quietly until the siren stops.

The president of Israel and other important people gather together with survivors, their families, and general public and take part in a service at Yad Vashem. And again they light six torches for the ones who risked their lives.

They start the ceremony with laying wreaths at the foot of the torches. During the ceremony, people might read poetry or sing songs. There is a popular song called, "The Partisan's Song". This whole day is broadcast onTV or radio.

Yom HaShoah is very similar to Veterans Day in America. We remember the veterans who fight for our rights and us. They remember those who fought for them in the Holocaust. As you can see their holidays can be very similar to ours, in many ways.

Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah

In a time of cruelty, war, and pain, the Jewish people of Europe fought for their lives. Anti-Semitism is a new term but an act that has been portrayed onto the Jewish people for thousands of years. In 1933 the Jewish people's lives were about to change. In Germany Adolf Hitler became chancellor. Over time he made laws that made him the most powerful man in Germany. He formed and army, called the Nazis. His goals were to rule that world and rid the world of Jewish people. This was the start of the biggest massacre known to man-kind. This massacre was called the Holocaust. Over 7 million people died in forms of death not known to many people. Six million of those people were Jewish people.

That is the reason that the Jewish people celebrate Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah (Yom HaShoah for short). Yom HaShoah was invented to remember those who died in that terrible form. The Israeli Parliament (also known as the Knesset) started the holiday. It was started on April 12, 1951. On the day of Yom HaShoah they have feasts to honor those who died. They light six candles honoring each 1 million Jewish people who died.

Non-Jewish people light 7 candles for each one million who died, including those who died as enemies of Hitler. They also go to services at a synagogue and say Kaddish prayers.

Yom HaShoah is a lot like Veteran's Day. In both holidays you remember those who died. You take day to remember in both holidays. Also in both holidays you do special things to honor those who lost there lives.
