Yom HaShoah
By Brady T.

Yom HaShoah is the remembrance of the holocaust. It is a very very sad holiday. Millions of family member's friends were murdered and slaughtered in the holocaust. Between the years 1939 and 1945 6 million Jews were killed.1947 is when the holiday started. To commemorate the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel there are national and local ceremonies. On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, restaurants, theater, cinemas, etc. are closed. Regular television and radio programming is replaced by documentaries and somber music. We must never forget what happened to those people in those 6 years.

Yom Hashoa is the same as Veteran's Day because they are both sad holidays and you remember who died there in the same years.

Yom Hasoah
By Carol F.

Yom Hasoah is a day to celebrate the fallen solders and Jewish people who died between 1941-1945.

What was the Holocaust?

Yom Hasoah or Holocaust was a mass killing of Jews. Holocaust in Greek means, "Sacrifice by fire" The killing was done by the Nazi regime to exterminate the Jewish culture.

Who were the Nazis? The Nazis were a group of people (mostly Germans) who thought they were the ?Superior Beings ?r in other words they thought they were better than anyone else. They also tried to exterminate the Gypsies and any one with mental disabilities.

The Jewish culture celebrates this day on the 27th day of the month Nissan. Yom Hashoah originated from Israel. It started on April 12, 1951. The Jewish people celebrate this tragic event by lighting a candle in a window. On the eve before Yom Hashoah all stores and theatres and business are closed. On Yom Hashoah they sound sirens for two minutes and everyone and everything stops in silence for those two minutes. Before the Holocaust nine million Jews existed. After the Holocaust only three million Jews remained. Six million Jews dead.

Yom Hashaoh reminds me of Memorial Day because on Memorial Day we remember our countries solders. It is like Yom Hashoah because we remember our soldiers that have been lost and fallen. We also remember the soldiers who are now in war. We remember all those people who were lost in war. Yom Hashoah and Memorial Day are very alike.

Yom Hashoah

During the Holocaust 6 million Jews perished and now there is a holiday to mourn the 6 million who perished for believing in something different. This holiday was started in 1959 by The Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion and the President of Israel Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. They celebrate this holiday by lighting a yellow candle in every home. This candle is known as a Yahrzeit (memorial) candle. Another ritual that is common is the recitement of the Kaddish, the prayer of the departed. Also thousands of Israeli students and Jews from around the world get together and hold a memorial service in Auschwitz. It is also known as "The March of The Living" in defiance of the Holocaust death marches.

Hebrew and Yiddish songs are played on the radio and flags on public buildings are put at half mast. For two minutes straight at 10:00 am air-raid sirens are sounded through out Israel. Everything stops at this time. This is a silent tribute to the dead. They also recite all 6million names at public ceremonies.

In America Memorial Day is held on the last Monday in May. On this holiday we thank all who have served in the military. In addition to remembering Memorial Day is a time for happiness. Such activities include picnics, family get together, and sporting events. Some families use this holiday to mourn relatives who have passed away, not just service men or women. When this holiday is used for this purpose a lot of families often go to cemeteries. Memorial Day is a holiday that is not celebrated anywhere but the United States. On this day the tombs of the Fallen Soldiers are decorated in remembrance.

Yom Hashoah and Memorial Day can be compared in several ways. One is that they are both used to mourn. Another reason is both mourn horrible tragedies, they also are not normally celebrated outside their home countries.

These are great holidays that have tragic yet great meanings behind them.
