My Journal of HolocaustMy family and I have been on the run away from the Nazis. We have tried everything from running away from them to hiding. They found one of my brothers and brought him to one of the many concentration camps. The concentration camps will probably finish him off and then we’ll never see him again. I’ve been hiding in my German neighbors basement so that if the Nazis ever came they wouldn’t think that they were hiding anything from them. One horrible day though we were eating dinner upstairs with the family and we heard the Nazis next door banging on the door and asking them to open up. The neighbors opened the door and then I knew that the Nazis were coming over to this house next. We slurped up the rest of the scraps and then ran into the basement. We went down the creaking staircase and down pasted the beat-up rugs. We ended our long journey through the basement by passing through a long corridor and ending in a small room at the end of the hallway. In the room was a mattress on the ground and an old rug, next to the bed was a reading light and a small end table, in the room was also a gigantic wardrobe. There was also a very small closet, the closet had a door and was a walk-in closet. My brother and I went into the closet and hid behind the many piles of dirty clothes. My parents decided that we should all hide in different places so that if they find one of us that they would think that were anymore people hiding. So my dad hid in the huge wardrobe with my mother. I knew by my calculations that the front door was right above us. I heard a loud knock and then the thick lock click open. The officer said that they were going around to see if any Germans were going against Hitler and keeping Jews in their homes. My neighbors said that they were free to look around the house. They started by checking all the rooms upstairs it didn’t take them long to come back to the first floor and say that there was nothing wrong going on up there.
So then my heart started to skip a beat when I heard the officer say that he would like to check out the basement. My neighbors didn’t say anything; good thing if they did it would have given us away. We heard the angry officer clop down the creaky wood steps. I could hear him lifting up boxes and then the rustling of papers. I opened up the door a sliver and looked out, I saw the lights flash on and then I knew at that exact moment that someone in our family was going to get caught. I slowly without making a noise closed the closet door silently praying that he wouldn’t go all the way down the hallway into this room. Then I heard the noise that I will never forget, the closet door opened I looked out and to my surprise I saw my German neighbors saying that the officer had left. My heart was skipping beats and then finally a small friendly smile was placed upon my face. Finally the Nazis had lost we were safe. I knocked three times on the wardrobe and no one came out, I thought that my parents probably thought that it was the officer and just decided to wait it out so I knocked again said hey, it’s me, Alice. Then all of a sudden a loud bang and a crash my parents came tumbling out of the wardrobe. Me, my brother, and both of my parents squeezed together in a forceful group hug. We had escaped the Nazis now and we could escape the Nazis any other time that we wanted.
