This Train Revised By: Hannah "This Train Revised" is a song that tells us a great deal about the Holocaust. It is a song by the Indigo Girls, and it shows us many important and forgotten facts about the people at the concentration camps. There are many symbolic elements in the song that tell us of the Jews' harsh conditions. The song mentions many things such as: pee, blood, the Star of David, shock the monkeys, a dancer with no legs, and a healer with no hands. The pee and blood came from the train ride to the concentration camps. If they had to relieve themselves, they used the bathroom in front of everyone else. If they were cut on the train ride or during the hard labor, they had to let it bleed. They couldn't clean their cuts to stop ANY infections. The David's Stars represented the yellow stars the Jews were forced to wear and show the world they were Jews. To shock the monkeys, meant to run cruel experiments, turning average everyday people who just happened to be "a threat", into vegetables. A healer with no hands and a dancer with no feet, they both show how these 6 million Jews could've changed society. It could be the solution to cancer or the way to make a teleportation system. It shows REALLY how little the Nazis knew. If you think about how the prisoners felt they probably had very mixed feelings: afraid, terrified, mad, nonhuman. They were afraid for their lives; how could they possibly survive this camp with "humane" conditions? Some didn't feel like a human at all. They had no human rights. No freedom, no clothes, hardly any food, work all day, and almost no sleep at night-this was their life. There wasn't a chance to escape; some didn't even have a chance of survival. Most were gassed while others were shot at a wall while everyone else watched. Some even died of horrible diseases and illnesses due to the unsanitary conditions. The few that survived came out with hardly enough clothes to protect them from the cold, and were scarred for life; the concentration camp did VERY permanent damage to everyone. There wasn't just cruelness shown at shown at the concentration camps. Jews were unwelcome everywhere. They couldn't come outside, not even for a breath of fresh air. The Jews couldn't get good jobs, and their self-owned businesses didn't make any money. They Jews didn't get the pat on the back that everyone needs once in a while; they were punished for no reason. The only kindness shown was from the people in the Underground. The Holocaust was a horrible time during which Adolf Hitler killed millions of Jews in the torture chambers called concentration camps. We can see how a few peoples' prejudice changed the world, for the worse. Unfortunately, the Holocaust did happen, but those unlucky peoples' legacies will live on forever. |
