This Train Revised

I recently heard the song "This Train Revised," by the Indigo Girls. It is about the train that brought Jews to concentration camps.

The song uses many symbolic words. It says that on the train are gypsies, queers, and David's Stars. David's Stars were Jews, who were treated brutally during the harsh times of the Holocaust. Queers were homosexuals, who were also hated by Hitler. Finally, Gypsies were free spirited people, who were, like David's Stars and queers would not be tolerated by the Nazis.

These prisoners must have gone through a lot on the train. They were confused and unprepared for what awaited. They had not been told the magnitude of where they were going. I'm sure that they had a deep feeling of dread.

The song also states what the people could have been, such as "a dancer with no legs" and "a healer with no hands." They could have been great, but they were not given the chance to contribute their skills. "A runner with no feet" cannot run, as "a teacher with no face" cannot teach. "A builder with no back" cannot build and "a writer with no voice" cannot write.

I felt that these treatments were unnecessary and wrong. People were treated brutally for being who they were. This song really makes me realize how harsh the Holocaust was. These people could have made the world a better place, if only they were given a chance.
