IJEKA: Before the European Holocaust Memorial Day celebration, a completely reconstructed sacred place of Rijeka sinagogue was presented yesterday. In this way, one more phase of this valuable monument of Jewish life, culture and tradition in Rijeka has been finished.

The reconstruction of the sacred part of the sinagogue was finished after more months of work at the end of December 2005. The walls and the desks have been renewed, both of altars restaured, as well as the ark of the covenant and lower and upper wreath, then, a small kitchen, a hall and windows, so the entire interior of the Rijeka sinagogue has shown its new brightness

400 thousand kunas was spent for the first phase of reconstruction, the city of Rijeka participated with 200 thousand, the Ministry of Culture with 150, and Primorsko-goranska county with 50 thousand kunas. In previous phase the roof of the sinagogue had been reconstructed and the electrical installations fixed. A project of complete sinagogue architecture renewal was made.

According to the project of the architectors G. Angayal and P. Fabre, the orthodox school sinagogue was built on the initiative of the Union of Orthodox Israelis, whose members bought the land in the Ivan Filipovic Street. After the big temple had been destroyed in 1944, the small sinagogue became the centre of the Jewish Community in Rijeka.

» This is indeed the important event, not only for the Jewish Community, but also for the city of Rijeka in whole. The rooms inside the sinagogue are now adapted for even more active work of the Community, especially for the work of Jewish youth. We are grateful to all those who have helped with this reconstruction, especially to the City of Rijeka, for their permanent support² - said Filip Kohn from the Jewish Community in Rijeka.
