Olive Oil

Kinds of olives:

There are three main kinds of olives in Israel;

  • Sory: with a bitter taste and aromatic smell.
  • Barnea: with a spicy aroma; reminds of fruits taste.
  • Pikoal: sweet taste; similar to almond and orange tastes.

Important in the past and the present:

Even in the bible time, olives were very important to people; it was a very popular produce and was used in cosmetics, the food industry and the oil industry. A branch of olives symbolized peace.

In the modern world, the olives are still important to people and olives are used almost like they were used 2000 years ago…

 Oil Production:

In the traditional production of olives there were three main phases:

  1. Mashing the olives in AKELIM (special baskets)
  2. Pickling the bland with pressure.
  3. Separation of the oil from the MOHAL (the remains of the olives).

Firms in Israel:

In Israel there are more than 100 firms that produce olives and olives oil. The most famous are- "HALOOZHA", "KVOOZHAT YAVNE" and "ZAITA".

A travel in olive plantation:

I traveled with my class to an Olive Plantation in the last autumn.

That was part of the agriculture class.

We did a MASIC ZAITIM; we pick olives, and pickled them.
