Olives in Israel

Sorts of olives:

There are  7 main sorts of olives in israel, The important  and the best types for eating  is “zuri” the others are: Nabali Baladi, Manzenilo and nubo,

The oil production types are: Barnea, picual and Maalot.

In the future we are going to develop more types  from another states.

There importance in the past and today in everyday life:

In the past a lot of people had olives for sale and for there  living.

You can make many foods  and olives are very healthy.

A leaf of a olive is a symbol of peace.

In the bible olives are mentioned in many books for example:“a land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;” Deuteronomy 8:8

Now there are many factories that sell olives as oil or as food .

I  usually eat food with olives oil because it is much more healthy and it is less calories,

And it is a very tasty spice in the salad.

Quality:

The Quality of the olives are  dependant on few things:

  1. the sensitivity to disease
  2. the oil  quality
  3. the place
  4. the weather

Olive Oil  Production:

Traditional:

In the past  people used to make oil in 3 steps ; you needed to mash the olives then you need to separate the oil  from the remainder of the olives and the last step is the  seperat of  the clean oil from the dirty water and oil .

Modern:

Now people make oil with machines. There are very few  people that still make oil in the old way. In a  few population people don’t want to stop the traditional way  so they keep on this way.

A local factory for making olives oil:

The Shita house is a kibbutz near Afoula. It has 2 factories. One is a olives factory they make oil and preserve olives. They export olives and vegetables  all oround the world. They make tours and trips for children and adults. The kibbutz and the factory work with the jewish agency for israel.

Visiting local olive planters:

A  couple of months ago I went with the class to  olives plantation  it was really fun and interesting. We picked the olives and we gather them all together. After a week the olives were ready and we made from them olives pressing.

I learn a lot about olives from this tour.
