Tsunami 2004-05

Lesson from John Wu-China

To all the global dreamers,
Here are messages from the old dream discussion board and the new site for everyone to read about our friends from Sri Lanka.

These messages are heartwarming and in the spirit of global dreamers.

Rebuilding
Wed Jan 5, 2005 19:26

I am grieved at the loss and devastation suffered in the recent Tsunami. I believe that we have the technology here, but not many folks believe that it can happen here. My prayer is that sufficient help and resources reach the devastated communities in a timely fashion. I believe that even in the midst of a tragedy, we can find hope. In the US, we have had to learn that as a result of the terror attacks suffered here. However, I am always inspired by rebuilding. It gives us a chance to correct what was not correct before and to start anew. We will all get through this together and will rise up amidst the ashes. With the strength, mercy and support of our Creator, we can accomplish this. Our prayers are with you all.

Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day
Thu Jan 6, 2005 04:03

I am a teacher and few weeks ago I watched the movie Day After Tomorrow with the students at Horizon Academy www.horizonlanka.org We all watched horror scenes in the movie with huge tornados devastating US cities. But we never expected that the similar thing will happen in real here. Alas! huge tidal waves did the same thing here in Sri Lanka and we saw how small children were washed away into the sea live on TV screen!!! Unfortunately as Ruvini and Iresha had written, we suffered a lot due to less use of technology. In Day After Tomorrow as well, the authorities don't trust the scientists' predictions.

While we were watching Independence Day few years back, we didn't expect that something in the similar way would happen to USA. But we saw it in real at 9/11. Wasn't it the same director made both the movies??? I'm not sure.

We in Sri Lanka do not have much expereince in disaster management as well. We are ignorant of even small scale first aid. Can we do a small scale Disaster Management pilot here? May be you can help us in guiding?

Picture it in your head,
A 30 feet DEATH sweaping away to the cold sea bottom,
While it is approching in 600 miles per hour,
It strikes the beach like a punching bag.
It goes deep into the land and takes everything to the bottom of the sea when it goes back.
Its unbeliveable,
Why?
How?
Who?
I can keep asking but there would be no answers,
I can keep wondering,
I can keep on and on,
But the loss of life will keep rising,
Water, it is the source of life on earth,
But it can end life on earth,
Such deadly force in such a good thing.
Its unbeliveable.

Dear Wanni,
It's not your fault... dont feel guilty because the government didn't want us to help them, but I think that if they see that we want to help, so they wouldn't involve politics, we want peace, and we want to help, I hope that they will learn to understand this. In our school there is a donating project to the victims in sri-lanka we are donating food and clothes, I hope that they will appreciate it.
I've heard about a child(a girl) who saved a whole beach from the tsunami, two weeks before what happened she learned in her school about the tsunami wave and about the symptoms of it, and suddenly she saw those siptoms and she ran to her parents and she told them and they told the manager of the hotel, and he told the whole beach and that's the story. it's real, it was in the news,
I wish they chould tell the whole world before that hapenned. It's a tragedy, my uncle was saved from the tsunami, he was in Thailand and a faw days before the tsunami he came back home, when he heard about what happpend he was shocked, he has alot of luck, I think God loves him, and I'm very happy he came back home healthy.
I hope that the food we are donating will help you,

I hope that the countries and their people will appreciate it. Some of the goverments didn't appreciate it and some even don't take the contributions. I am very suprised that only 5 countries sent people to help the countries to find people who died and people that are alive. One of the five countries who sent people was Israel and people don't appreciate that.

Hi ALL,

Two HorizonLanka teachers, Aruna and Deepal have been helping the tsunami victims for the past few days in affected areas. Our students are unable to attend since the affected areas are far away from here. So they collected money (a portion of what they get as scholarships) and other stuff and sent them to the victims. Even minute help matters a lot to those who are affected there.

We plan to help the students in affected areas in coming weeks through our website. Since we do not have man power to handle all these from here, we have given some links from our website, www.horizonlanka.org

One of our boys who had been holidaying in a coastal village had a narrow escape and he had seen it all. He is still shocked.

Hi. I'm Gadi Cohen, and my school name is Jordan Middle School. We help the Indian Tsunami survivors by selling red Livesrong that on each one of them the words "TSUNAMI RELIEF" is written. Each one sells for 2 dollars. If you need fundraising ideas, here are some:
~~~
Fill some balloons with prizes, and each person needs to pay for a balloon, opens it, and sees if there is a prize.
~~~
Send hugs all over the school: each hug costs around 25 cents.
~~~
Bake Sale!
~~~
Garage sale!
~~~
Try to make an international dinner in the school.
~~~
You can fast for a day and collect pledges.
~~~
Sell old stuff you have.
~~~
I don't know any more, but if you have ideas, then email me!
And remember, even if it's a sad occasion, just smile!

Hi Gadi, It is so nice to see you on the board, come and visit us often and the class sends their best!

Hi Everybody,
I want to tell you about an interesting story I've heard about a girl from England.
Tilli Smitha ten year old British girl, was on the beach in Thailand with her family when she saw the water bubbling. She remembered the geography lesson and told her family to leave the beach at once.
A few weeks before the disaster, tilli finished an assignment about the tsunami, and understood that a wave like it can arrive to the beach soon and hurt the people there.
Tilli's parents warned the staff of the hotel and the other tourists, so everybody ran away and survived.

Hey Matt
I'm glad to hear that people are raising money for the chidren in Southern Asia.
What you think about this disaster? I think that's terrrible. I cant amagine how those children feel.
I can't and I don't want to try to think what the children who lost their parents and family feel. I want to help the men and women who lost their family and friends in that cursed wave that destoyed all those houses and beautiful places, but one kid can't change ,we can't change the present, but if even 100 people donate even 10 dollars each, it will be 1000 dollars and that kind of money can start making a diffrence.
If all the schools give and donate money and food for those who lost everything it will be great, it will be the start of a better world, the start of the future.

I am very sorry for all the people who died in the tsunami disaster. We send a lot of things from our school to the countries which have been hurt.

Your friend,
Ohad

TSUNAMI
Tue Jan 4, 2005 20:33

Regards,
Wanni

I heard many things about the tsunami and it's making me to choke. I saw terrible pictures about the victoms, the people that died and of the survivers. Many countries like Israel and USA donate money , people, and food for the countries that hurt from the tsunami. Even our school donating food and money for the servivers.

Here is a link to the WIZ website - InfoZone Health

http://www.worldinfozone.com/infozone.php?section=Health

There is a very good online First Aid Course. It might be useful to print off some of the information.
Also the Medline link has health related issues of the tsunami.
